Meet Jessica Lama, LPC, NCC, DBTC

I became a counselor over ten years ago because I am passionate about helping people navigate their life’s journey. My life’s journey has led me through various professions within education, wellness, and human services; all with the overarching theme of connecting with and helping others through real-life human experiences. Witnessing my clients’ growth and resilience is incredibly rewarding. I am continually inspired by the strength and courage of those I work with, and I am honored to be part of their healing process.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in education and a Master’s degree in professional counseling, both from Ottawa University, Arizona. I am trained in numerous therapeutic modalities, certified in DBT, and am recognized as a Master ART Practitioner. Additionally, I am certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). I’ve worked with children and adults with special needs, taught pre-k, kindergarten, and special education, and have worked as a counselor to the adult SMI population in a crisis recovery center and within community mental health. I’ve also worked as a clinical director, director of operations, and supervisor to associate level clinicians. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing many clinicians under my supervision become licensed and pursue their dreams as independently licensed counselors. After ten years of working in the community mental health setting, I decided it was time for a change of pace with greater work life balance and made the difficult decision to focus solely on my private practice. I couldn’t be happier with the trust and faith I put in myself, as I’ve loved every moment of owning my own private practice.

Quality time with friends and family is my highest priority when I’m not working. I have two nearly adult children, two bonus children, a bonus granddaughter, and a wonderful husband. In my free time you’ll often find me traveling to and exploring new places, enjoying nature, seeking new experiences (concerts, plays, trying new foods, thrill seeking adventures, etc.), loving on my pets, trying to keep my houseplants alive, and challenging myself with a new recipe in the kitchen. I believe life is meant to be lived to the fullest and enjoyed, therefore I prescribe to the motto: “Work hard, play hard”.

My Philosophy:

Counseling is a collaborative process where you and I work together to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. My approach is grounded in empathy, respect, and a deep understanding of the complexities of the human experience. I strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can openly express yourself and work through your challenges.

My Approach:

I utilize a holistic and integrative approach to therapy, combining traditional evidence-based methods with innovative techniques to address your unique needs. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or life transitions, I am here to support you. My goal is to help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and achieve a greater sense of well-being. You can also expect a dash of humor, as I firmly believe that laughter and fun can be the best medicine sometimes.

When working with me, you can expect the following modalities and interventions to be utilized or interwoven throughout your counseling sessions to meet your specific therapeutic needs:

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

ART is an innovative and evidence-based form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals rapidly process and resolve traumatic memories and other distressing experiences. ART utilizes a combination of techniques including rapid eye movements (similar to those used in EMDR therapy), imagery, and other cognitive approaches to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic memories. These techniques aim to help clients change the way they react to memories and current circumstances and reduce the emotional intensity associated with them.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a powerful intervention used to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It involves guided eye movements that help clients process and integrate traumatic memories, reducing their emotional impact.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

SFBT is a goal-oriented approach that emphasizes finding solutions in the present and exploring hopes for the future. It is particularly useful for clients seeking quick and effective strategies to address specific problems.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is designed to help individuals who experience intense emotions and struggle with self-regulation. It combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices to promote emotional stability, improve relationships, and enhance overall well-being.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a highly effective, evidence-based approach that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. This modality helps clients develop healthier thinking patterns and coping strategies to manage anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Comprehensive Energy Psychology (CEP)

CEP recognizes the powerful connection between the mind and body. CEP (also known as cognitive somatic practices) combines cognitive interventions with somatic techniques that influence the human bio-energy systems (i.e., neuroception, meridians, chakras, and biofields).

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSR integrates mindfulness and meditation to help clients manage stress, anxiety, and chronic pain. This modality encourages a present-moment awareness and fosters a compassionate, non-judgmental attitude towards oneself and one’s experiences. I interweave concepts and skills from Ericksonian Hypnotherapy within this modality.

Person-Centered Therapy

Person-centered therapy is a non-directive approach that emphasizes the client’s capacity for self-healing and personal growth. It provides a supportive and empathetic environment where clients feel understood and valued.

Positive Psychology

Positive Psychology focuses on strengths instead of weaknesses and building the good in life instead of repairing the bad. The goal is to build a “great” life rather than simply overcome challenges and suffering.
